Tracking my mouse.

I’ve always been a statistics hound, so yesterday I downloaded IOGraphica and gave it a spin while at work. I ran it for a little over 6 hours (would have been 8 given I didn’t forget I planned to do this <2 into work).

I ran it on the two computers I’m currently using at work, a macbook pro, and a windows laptop. Windows laptop had an external monitor connected to it.

The macbook serves as my primary computer while the windows laptop serves as a machine to run various programs such as IM, uTorrent, and other things that I don’t care to have in the way while I’m working, though occasionally during certain events I use it actively.

So here are my results: (open them in a new window for a better look)

Macbook Pro:

Windows:

As can be seen, there are major differences in the two.

To be clear: The black dots indicate idle. The bigger the dot, the longer my mouse was idle. This is very evident in on the second computer as we have some massive idle spots. The lines are mouse movement.

The second picture is much larger then the first because of the monitor connected to the laptop. The line in the middle of the image indicates the right side of the laptop’s screen, so everything to the left of that is the laptop screen. Unfortunately the program wasn’t able to properly track the external monitor movement and I have no idea how the lines on the right side of the image were created. However you can see the mouse move onto it from one point which is strange. For clarity, the external monitor is set to be on the right side of the laptop, not the right. This may or may not have had something to do with the issues it had tracking the mouse on that screen, that or IOGraphica just doesn’t support multiple monitors.

In the first picture, it’s clear to me how much I use my browser. I can see from the top rightish area where I’m often moving my mouse around to select tabs. I’d say though, 90% of my work day is in my browser, so this comes as no surprise. I can’t say anything else is clear as my mouse is all over the place everywhere else with brief mouse idle dots all over the place as well. I can say I know this is due to either going AFK or going into terminal where I do not need my cursor.

Overall it was just interesting to see what my movement looked like over a days work, I came out satisfied.
